show Abstracthide Abstract
Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri str. GM12. This strain, clone tetM-lacZ, is a large colony type. The organism was originally isolated by Al DaMassa. The authors obtained this predecessor of the sequenced organism from Dr. Mary Brown at the University of Florida. The sequenced strain was modified by the insertion of an oriC plasmid near the genome origin of replication. The plasmid contained the following genes: tetracycline resistance marker, beta-galactosidase, ampicillin resistance marker, a second copy of the M. mycoides dnaA gene, and a fragment of the M. mycoides dnaN. Organism was recently renamed from Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides large colony type to Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies capri.
The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) used it as a donor genome in the first demonstration of bacterial genome transplantation.
